Wednesday's Draft

Thanks for your patience with my blog as I get through this week of drafting. I am posting my team from Wednesday's draft (I should say OUR team since my buddy Dan co-manages with me). It is a 10-team mixed league, head-to-head format. Its also a keeper league where you can bring back three players from the previous year. I brought back Miguel Cabrera, Lance Berkman, and Garrett Atkins. I wasn't thrilled about bringing back two 3B considering how deep the position is this year, but Atkins and Cabrera were 4th and 12th in scoring last year.

The first set of players are our starters. I waited on 2B since Utley was kept from last year. My plan was to get Orlando Hudson late in the draft because he scores well in this type of league (low K rate and ability to draw walks). But with Kinsler still available late in the draft, I nabbed him. I love our pitching staff. You know your staff is deep when Cain has to start off on the bench. Our OF may seem a little shallow and weak, but many of the top tier guys were either kept or drafted in the first round before our pick (8th). And besides, Ibanez and Giles were 11th and 18th in scoring last year. I don't think Ibanez will have the numbers that he had last year, but I also feel that Giles will improve on his this year, so their regression to the mean should cancel each other out. We may look to trade a Furcal or Guillen for an OF. I wasn't expecting to get two stud SS, but Guillen was there later than we expected, so we took him.

I was really happy getting the catchers we got. If I pro-rate Martin's rookie season for a full year, he's a top 5 catcher nabbed late in the draft. I also really wanted Snell, but he went earlier than I expected. We nabbed Pelfrey with one of our last picks, so I was happy getting one of my dark horse pitching sleepers. We also picked Lincecum late. He's starting the year in Triple A, but I am expecting a call-up at some point this summer and expect an immediate impact similar to vintage Mark Prior 2002.
